Ignorance Fuels This Divided Nation
Submitted by Lisa Dale Miller MFT on December 6, 2015 - 11:07am
In the last 10 years, 73 mass shootings have occurred in the United States. More than half took place at schools or work environments; thirty occurred in shopping malls, restaurants, and religious or government buildings. Every perpetrator was male (except for one woman) over half were white, average age 35. Less than 1% of perpetrators were Muslim. The vast majority of perpetrators were homegrown Americans with prior mental health issues.
What is absolutely true, is in all cases these acts were carried out by individuals whose minds were overwhelmed with distorted thoughts and beliefs rooted in hatred, confusion, self-glorification, rage, and separateness. Every perpetrator owned semi-automatic weapons, the majority of which were obtained legally.
The mental and emotional suffering that lives within each of us inspires the agitation and rage that leads to societal violence. As long as the mental poisons of ignorance and hatred exist and Americans have unfettered access to guns, mass shootings will continue to plague our nation.
We are a deeply divided nation. After a mass shooting, a segment of the population runs out to buy more semi-automatic weapons; another segment rallies to rid the nation of the scourge of semi-automatic weapons. And neither segment is listening deeply to the other’s fears and concerns.
Guns will never make America safer. Other nations that have banned guns—particularly semi-automatic weapons—have stemmed the tide of mass shootings. It is time for America to follow suit and liberate itself from the grotesquely distorted views of the National Rifle Association and its right-wing apologists/supporters.
Let those of us who are clear-minded and open-hearted join together and listen deeply to the concerns and fears of gun-rights proponents and help them realize how they too are endangered by the NRA leaders’ warped agenda. Together, we can all connect to the desire for sustainable public safety and work to pass intelligent and effective gun control legislation.
Furthermore, I believe that every American deserves to have access to mental training for developing a calm, clear, loving, ethical mind. Everyone who is trained to teach others how to intentionally cultivate mind states of compassion and wisdom, and avert the arising and deleterious effects of selfishness, hatred, ignorance, mistrust, fearfulness and alienation, must commit themselves to selflessly offering these skills.
And one last appeal to my fellow female world citizens: it is our world and our responsibility to stand up, speak out, and wrest control away from psychopathic male leaders and their followers in religious, political, business, education, criminal and domestic settings. A sane world is one where all women have the freedom to be educated, financially self-sufficient and hold political office. Intelligent, compassionate power-sharing is the only path to non-harming.
